How to choose the RAM memory

There are currently three types of DDR Memories: DDR1 (up to 400 MHz), DDR2 (up to 1066 MHZ) and DDR3 (up to 2333 MHz).

What you need to look for when choosing the DDR Memory:

a) Type of memory – The technology used by the RAM Memory (DDR1, DDR2 or DDR3). The more advanced the technology, the faster the memory speed and performances. So choose a good performance to price RAM Memory.

b) Memory Capacity – Ranging from 256 MB to 4 GB. The higher the capacity, the better the performance.

c) Memory Frequency – The speed at which the RAM Memory is operating. The higher the speed, the higher the performances.
Make sure you don’t choose RAM Memory with higher speeds than the Motherboard can support.

In order to calculate the transfer rate of the RAM Memory just multiply the Frequency by 8. This number is also given by the name of the RAM Memory: ex PC 10600 for a DDR2 running at 1333 MHz.

d) Cache Latency (CL) - The delay time between the commands sent by the memory controller to a particular memory column. The higher the amount of the CL, the shorter the latency and thus, the better the performances. So choose a good performance to price RAM Memory.
The high end models also have heat dissipaters in order to increase performance and lifetime. Instead of using a single 4 GB RAM Memory Card it’s better to use 2 x 2 GB Cards with Dual Channel Technology to improve performance.

e) Dual Channel Technology - A technique used to double the communication speed between the memory controller and the RAM memory in order to improve the system performance.
Make sure the RAM Memory Cards are inserted in the same coloured slots otherwise the Dual Channel Technology will not be enabled.

f) Triple Channel Technology – A brand new technology developed to further increase the communication speed between the memory controller and the RAM memory. This technology was specially developed for the new i7 Core Processors and ensure an optimal performance at low voltage.

Usually Dual or Triple Channel Memory come in Kits but you can also buy
them separately as long as they are the same model and support the technology.

- Make sure the RAM Memory Cards are inserted in the same coloured slots otherwise the Dual or Triple Channel Technology will not be enabled.
- Make sure your Processor and Motherboard support Dual or Triple Channel Technology.
