How to build your own computer - Choosing the hard drive
There are two main types of hard drives: Internal and External Hard Disk Drives.

What you need to look for when choosing a Hard drive:

a) Memory Capacity: The amount of memory on the Hard Disk Drive. The higher the
amount the better the capacity to price ratio. So choose carefully.

b) Interface: The type of connection used by the hard drive: Old Hard disk drives used
the IDE (with a bandwidth of 16, 33, 66, 100 and 133 MB/s), while new ones use a SATA
(1 GB/sec), SATA II (3 GB/sec) and SATA III (6 GB/sec) interface.

c) RPM: The higher the RPM, the faster the data can be read, thus increasing overall
performance. Most Hard disk drives have 7.200 RPM and can go up to 10.000 RPM.

d) Memory Cache: The part of the Hard disk drives that stores data so that future requests
for that data can be served faster, ranging from 8MB to 32 MB.

External Hard Disk Drives are connected to a computer through an USB slot and can
be used to move data from computer to computer with ease. The only differences are the
higher costs and lower speeds at which data is transferred using the USB and USB 2.0
connections, opposed to the internal Hard disk. However while the USB 2.0 provides speeds
up to 480 MB/sec, the new USB 3.0 connection can reach speeds up to 4.8 GB/sec.

- Make sure you buy a cooler for your Hard disk drive in order to increase its lifetime.
